Hyperbole is when we exaggerate something and trust me, you do it all the time! You just didn’t know that those terms are called hyperbole. Writers use hyperbole to make their writing more interesting and funny – for effect!
Hyperbole Examples
“I’m so hungry I could eat a horse!”
“I waited a million years for the bus to come!”
“My backpack weighs a ton!”
“I have a mountain of homework to do. I don’t think I’ll be done tonight”
“I’m so tired I could sleep for a year!”
What is a Metaphor?
A metaphor is when we say that one thing is something else, even though it’s not. We do this to show how they are similar. It’s different from a simile because it doesn’t use “like” or “as.”
Examples of Metaphor:
- “The classroom was a zoo.” (The classroom was so loud, it resembled the environment of a zoo.
- “Her smile is sunshine.” (Her smile isn’t actually the sun, but it’s warm, bright and friendly like the sun.)
- “Mr. Kamau rarely smiles. His heart is a stone.” (He is emotionally cold or unfeeling.)
- “You got the job? Oh, that’s music to my ears” (That’s really good news that is pleasing to hear)
